At the highest point of the park is the medieval herb garden in honour of the Zurich naturalist and town physician Conrad Gessner (1516-1565). Over 50 well-known medicinal plants are presented and provide an insight into the knowledge of medicinal plants in the 16th century.
The octagonal Palm House was built from wood and glass in 1851 and replaced by a cast iron one in 1877. Today it is mainly used for concerts, theatre and exhibitions.
The hill on which the Old Botanical Garden is located was once a bulwark for the defence of Zurich: the ‘zur Katz’ bulwark.
