Tertiary Garden

Tertiärgarten

Best time to visit: March to October

Until about 2.6 million years ago, the global climate was much warmer than today. Many warmth-loving tree species occurred in Europe. In the course of the Ice Age, about two-thirds of all species became extinct because they were hindered in their southward migration by the Alps, the drought in the Mediterranean region and the Mediterranean Sea.
Thus, at least five species of tulip tree were found in Europe - today there are only two living species: the tulip tree Liriodendron tulipifera in North America and the Chinese tulip tree L. chinense in China. You can visit both species - along with many other species that colonised Europe at that time - in our tertiary garden.
